The Fine Art of Control

Sophomore year in the fall I took a creative writing class. During one of our classes the professor asked us to write on the prompt "The fine are of ..." I chose control because that has always been an important hot topic in my life. Growing up with extremely strict parents often leads to feelings of being controlled and with this  resentment can set in. This is exactly what happened in my case and I needed to find some way to take control of my life. Food seemed to be the perfect thing. The one thing in my life I could control was my body and so I did. I know this is all very cliche for those in the eating disorder community but it's true. It did not hurt that my mother's way of showing love was through food and so by refusing to eat I could convey the message that I did not feel as if she really loved me. Logically I knew that she loved me as I was her daughter but it always seemed as if she put the family last and I hated this. I believe that my mother has an anxiety disorder that has gone undiagnosised  for years. The anxiety that I felt due to constantly being late to everything and criticized in my behavior, school work, body type, eating habits and so much more led me to my eating disorder.

Control is something that everyone wants. Everyone seeks to be in control and people deal with not being in control in different ways. Life is full of uncertainty and that can be terrifying. Thinking about my future often gives me panic attacks. Lately, as I have been struggling, I have been thinking a lot about my future and what I want to do with my life. For a long time I wanted to be a therapist and help women and men who are going through what I am going through and have gone through or something similar. ED does not like that idea because he knows that in order be a therapist I have to be fully and completely committed to recovery which he does not want and scares the hell out of me causing lots of anxiety. I know that I cannot let ED control my life like this but thinking about my future as a possible therapist and reevaluating that has proven to have a positive aspect. Over the summer I interned at a domestic violence shelter. Working on the hotline I encountered a lot of women in horrible situations whom I had to talk to and counsel to the best of my ability. Some days were so difficult emotionally because of the situations these women would find themselves in which has made me consider the burnout rate for therapists and others working in that field. I have started looking into other options for my future which is both exciting and anxiety provoking. I have control over this, some control, but it is just such a major decision that I know I need to seek out advice. I will not let the fear and anxiety of this decision and situation rule me. This is one way that I can work to take my life back from my anxiety and ED.

The Fine Art of Control
You feel a  gradual welling up of fear. But you know you need to keep your cool. In these situations it does not pay to panic. Taking a deep breath you still your wildly beating heart, willing it to slow its pace. It does not want to listen, in a race with the techno music blasting from your speakers. You start to regret the decisions that landed you here. Why are you here again? You don't remember. You search frantically for your friends hoping to spot them in the crowd. It's too thick; you cannot see. The dull ache turns to an intense knife of pain. You sit down trying to convince your hear it is okay. But the pain continues, you decide to give into it knowing that it will eventually go away. After all who is in control, you or your body? "Me," it says but you don't listen and you never did.

Negative Energy and a New Year

"Through the Goddess, we can discover our strength, enlighten our minds, own our bodies, and celebrate our emotions." Starhawk

I know that I have just used this quote in my last post but I would really like to take some time to reflect on what this means. In struggling with my eating disorder I am denying myself more than just food and the nutrients that comes with it. I deny myself the energy to get things done, to have fun, to  live my life. I deny my needs and say that they are not important, that they can be set aside as easily as one casts away junk mail. I am denying my very right to exist. In not eating and working my body beyond the point where it can safely maintain itself I am seeking to disappear, to become unseen, unnoticed, invisible. I have to ask myself why, why is it that I allow myself to continue down a path that I know deep down holds only pain, betrayal, anger, frustration and so much more. What is going on within me or in my environment that has fostered the right condition for such self-hatred? Growing up Catholic I was always taught that we are made in the image and likeness of God, with the capital g, and as such are we not god-like ourselves? But no with the sin of two people we were supposedly cast out of paradise and made to live a harsh life. I do not claim to be a theologian but this does not seem like the act of a loving god. The old testament, actually, shows an angry, vengeful god who deals out punishments to his people for disobeying his laws. I think that this punishment is what I really took away from my religious education classes and this is what I experienced at home. As a child I was filled with so much fear that I hid things and did things in secret so as not to be punished for being myself. I do not seek to criticize any religion but for me, I need to work on my relationship with the goddess. I think that I have allowed the daily difficulties of life to get in the way of time spent in reflection. This is not wholly my fault. There has been a lot of negativity this past year and that is what I need to work on first.

Negative self-talk is a major problem. I can never seem to shake the critic in myself. I do not use the same critic when talking or thinking about others so why am I so hard on myself. I do not know the answer but I would like to make a fresh start this year. I am going to try to reduce this negative self-talk. I am going to work on staying positive and not letting myself get bogged down when things get difficult. This past year I had to deal with a lot of shit and I need to work on cleaning up the wreckage that was left in it's wake. Included in working on the negative self-talk, I need to start taking a step back from other people's lives. I love my friends but I seem to make friends with people who have a lot they are dealing with and I have learned that, though some day I may become a therapist, at this moment I am not equipped to handle all of the worries and trials of my friends. I need to learn to set boundaries if others are unable to set healthy boundaries themselves. I need to learn that it is okay to say no and that I need to take care of myself before I can even think about taking care of others. I have known this for a long time but this year I am making it a goal, a priority to carry the knowledge into action.

Boundaries themselves have always been difficult. I never seem to be able to have healthy boundaries with friends. I need to be able to say no, to define what is and is not appropriated in a friendship. So this year I am going to work on boundaries. Already I have been trying to set up strong boundaries with my mother. In the past we have had a lot of issues and I have felt that she is often invading myself, my very being. I have felt crowded by her and have been working to not let her get through my defenses. I have to do this before I can get better along with many other things. This is just the beginning. I know I have a lot of work to do and a lot of reflecting to do. I am going to make a commitment to take time each day to reflect and grow closer to my goddess and to myself.

Looking for Inspiration

“Spirituality leaps where science cannot yet follow, because science must always test and measure, and much of reality and human experience is immeasurable.” Starhawk
“Through the Goddess, we can discover our strength, enlighten our minds, own our bodies, and celebrate our emotions.” Starhawk
“As women, however, we need to look very closely at these philosophies and ask ourselves the hard-headed, critial question, "What's in it for me?" "What does this spiritual system do for women?" Of course, the gurus, teachers, and ascended masters will tell us that, even by asking such a question, we are merely continuing in our enslavement to the Lords of Mind; that it is simply another dodge of the ego as it resists dissoulution in the All." Starhawk

I know that my body is not a place to carry out my war on the world or my family. It is not the ground for my struggle with any opposing force. I have been through the therapy and know these things rationally but it is difficult to apply rationality in daily life. As a human I am not just a rational being but an emotional being as well and right now my emotions are just crazy. Life is just crazy and I have really been struggling. I am trying to look for the things and reasons for to get better and stay in recovery. Currently ED is very loud and resistant to leaving me alone. I have seen my doctor twice in two weeks. I see her again in a week. My weight has been stable for the past two weeks. My vitals are beginning to be affected. I know I can't keep going on like this but Can't seem to stop either.

My doctor describes ED as a chronic disease which it is. I will have to live with this constantly and struggle with it. This knowledge makes me feel so hopeless about the whole thing. I don't want to be constantly battling my eating disorder. I don't want to have the comments constantly running through my head. I don't want to be thinking about calories, exercise, food portions and weight all the time. I spend too much time focused on numbers but I want to be more than just a number. I want to be more than my eating disorder. But at times I forget this or don't believe that it is really what I want. ED gets in my head and tricks me. I have a hard time distinguishing between myself and him. He convinces me that he knows best but I know he is wrong, so why does that not make ignoring him easier? The worst thing is that I know logically that it is bad and wrong but I keep using behaviors that will kill me if I do not stop. I do not know how to deal with this. I love my friends, family and boyfriend and do not want to cause them pain but I cannot explain what it's like to them. They will never understand, ever. They cannot understand unless they have been through it. They don't know how to support me in recovery and I don't know how to get support from them because I don't know how to make things better.

I have a hard time remembering what it was like before ED. I don't remember that child-like wonder and self-love. It seems to me that I have always hated my body and been filled with self-hatred. I guess the depression started before the eating and the depression reduced my intake then I started losing weight and loved it. Right now I'm not losing weight and I don't like it. I want to be skinny. People tell me I am skinny but I have so much trouble believing them. I wonder what is wrong with me and just become more depressed. The problem right now is I don't know how deep I am in which probably means that I am in too deep and need to get out and will need help to get out. But I don't know if I want that help. I am acting like I do to my treatment team but I am just so filled with doubt. I find myself doubting everything. Yet if I continue I will lose everything. and I don't want that. I just want to be beautiful. That is partly how this started but now I don't know how to finish it but it may finish me.

I don't want to die but I know that if I don't start getting better I will end up permanently damaging my body. I do not want this to happen, though it may already have happened. I need to work to find the motivation to get better. This seems so wrong that I have to work to eat and find the motivation to eat. Eating should be something that is natural. What happened to the world that this has become such a major problem? How did this happen? Life used to be so simple and now every day is a major struggle. I don't understand how this has gotten so bad. All I know is that ignoring ED seems impossible.

Christmas Eve

Well it's christmas eve and the family is at church. I'm home alone. Got together my boyfriend today and it was great! However I am still struggling a lot. I feel guilty for eating and then when I do eat I get sick. I hate this. It's not like I'm trying to throw up but I am throwing up and I know it's not good. I know I can't keep going on like this but I'm finding it almost impossible to stop.I know I need help and I'm working on it.

Home and Still Struggling

Well I came home last night. My boyfriend brought me back and I fell asleep on the way back. I am now in egg-shell land and have to be vigilant all the time. Meals will be late and with the parental units with comments make all the time. I don't know how this is going to be. I don't think things will go well with me here. I am seeing my psychiatrist this week and I'm supposed to make an appointment with my doctor. I don't really want to do that but I know I have to. I'm going to try to make it so that my boyfriend takes me instead of my parents. I want to change my emergency contacts so that my parents are no longer my emergency contacts but that's a whole other story.

I am home and while my kitties make me feel better I also have to deal with my mother and that doesn't go well. I brought my scale home which made my boyfriend disappointed in me but I'm not ready to give it up. I just don't know how to do this. I know deep down that what I'm doing is wrong, that I should not be restricting but I can't stop. I can't seem to trust my boyfriend completely about this. I want to believe him but ED has a hold on me. I am so tired of fighting that I don't know if I want to keep it up. I almost wish that I could be a Renfew but I don't have time for that. I am just so sick of all of this but I can't give it up. I feel horrible about it but it's so hard. I feel bad because I'm constantly disappointing my boyfriend. He is trying to hard to be helpful but I'm not getting better so it's frustrating for him. The guilt from not getting better even though he's trying so hard to be helpful is just making everything so much harder and I know he doesn't want me to feel guilty but I can't help it.

Further Down The Rabbit Hole

Years ago I followed this image, chasing it wherever it went. Little did I know what the results would be. I followed the image through the mirror and down the rabbit hole. In this world ED was the ruler. His word was law. While I thought that three years ago I had escaped this world but today I find myself back down the hole. I am not really sure how I got here or why ED is being so aggressive. I have some thoughts as to the possibilities but I know it is more complicated than just one or two reasons.

I don't want to be listening to him and yet I do. I am finding it really difficult to separate myself from ED. I am living in his world and his reality. It's like he's taken over my life and I'm letting him. I feel weak because of this. I was doing fairly well in recovery but now I've given in again. All the time, money and resources I've spent and my family has spent on my recovery is now wasted. I don't really want to get "better" and don't need to because I have convinced myself that there is nothing wrong. I have control of my life. These are the things that ED is telling me/I am telling myself. Logically I know these are lies but I believe them. This knowledge makes it even more difficult. It has started to effect my relationship with  my boyfriend and for that I feel horribly guilty. Almost everyday he and I now have a fight over my intake, working out, my appearance and worth, etc. and it makes everything so much harder. I know that ED is trying to split us apart and he's doing a pretty good job of it. My boyfriend is starting to question whether I love ED more than him and the pain that this causes is unbearable. I love him so much and to have him believe this is excruciating. I have been trying to fight ED but I just can't seem to do so. I am weak willed and it is affecting every aspect of my life. I know what I need to do but it is actually doing it that is so damn hard. I am fight first for the will to want recovery 100% because I know until I make that decision and commitment everything else is pointless.

I Can't Fight This Feeling

I cannot fight this anymore. I am really struggling. I feel so guilty when I eat anything. I take every opportunity to go to the gym. I feel like I'm a total failure and completely worthless. I am depressed and cry myself to sleep most nights. ED's voice is in my head all the time and I cannot shut him out or shut him up. This was the case even in recovery so once again I believe him. I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle. I am tired, so tired, all the time. I just want to give in and give up. All I want to do is curl up in my room and hide but I cannot do this for obvious reasons. I am sure that part of the problem is it's finals and I have a lot to do but this was bad before that. I cannot say that it came back when my friend attempted suicide because I was struggling before that. I was struggling on and off even before school started. Honestly part of it I think was the realization that I had been in recovery for three years this summer and that freaked me out. I don't know if that is the sole or main cause or factor but I know that I am not doing well and I don't want to admit it. I don't want to say that it is a problem. I do not have the time to have an eating disorder that needs treatment right now. I just don't. I have too much going on in my life to take the time to stop and get help for this. I have goals that do not include treatment. Writing this and reading it sounds crazy and my rational side can argue and say that those goals are the very reason that I need to get help but my mind is not rational right now. I am not myself. ED has just completely taken over and I am torn between wanting to get better and wanting to get worse. I know that as an adult I cannot be forced into treatment. I know that I have to finish this semester. I know that I have friends and family who love me and are worried. I know my boyfriend is in a lot of pain because I am not eating right. Yet none of it matters to me. All that matters is the anxiety I have about eating food. The fear of gaining weight. The belief that I am too fat. The need to lose weight and deny my needs. I am so scared of myself, of ED, of others, of what I am willing to put myself through. The self-hatred that I carry is huge and it scares me. I know that I am in a lot of pain right now and I don't know why or how to deal with it but ED does. ED is giving me the answers right now and I am listening because I am weak and scared. I know that I need to stop listening, stand up for myself and figure out what is going on but that is scarier than ED and I don't know if I have the strength right now. I am overwhelmed. I know what to do but I don't know how to do it.

I Can't Do This

I am really really really struggling. I keep cutting back and going to the gym whenever I can. I am extremely stressed and having a hard time focusing, especially with reading which is what I have most of. I am losing hope if I haven't already lost it. All I can think about is how fat I am. I have two mirrors in my room which aren't helping any, one right across from my bed. I hate feeling like this all the time. I hate the feeling of food in my stomach. I don't know what is wrong or why this is happening. I just want it to go away. I hate my body and I hate everything about myself. I just want to sleep, curl up in my bed and not go anywhere or do anything. I especially don't want to eat. I don't understand why this is happening. I don't understand why I just want to lose weight and be skin and bones. I know, logically, it makes no sense and is wrong so why do I want it so badly. What is wrong with me? I'm so confused and scared. I just want to disappear. I can't deal with everything. I have to get through finals but I don't know if I can. I can barely concentrate. I just feel like I can't do any of this and I don't want to. I just want to stay in my room and starve, leaving only to go to the gym because when I go to the gym I feel better.

Thanksgiving and Chaos

Thanksgiving has never been my favorite holiday. For all of us with eating disorders it is a day of high stress. The centrality of food on holidays makes them times of high anxiety and often little pleasure. The holidays are supposed to be joyous times but I often ask myself why do they have to be so much about food? Yes Thanksgiving celebrated the plentiful harvest and the friendship of early settlers and native americans but food does not need to be the center piece on the table so to speak. This year, as in the past, I have much to be grateful for: friends, family, my pets, my education and most importantly, the most recent addition to my circle, by boyfriend Dan. He has been the most amazing thing in my life for almost the past year and I don't know where I would be without him. While the Thanksgiving table may be piled high with turkey, potatoes, stuffing and more, while my mother may start a fight with me during dinner, I have him to fall back on. Though he could not be there for me physically this year he helped me through it with support from afar and by taking me out the day after. I may not be at my best for him yet as yesterday I just cried for a while in his arms. The knowledge that I have him there for me keeps me going. I may waver in my desire for recovery but he will always remind me why I am fighting for it. I know that ED is bad but He is all that I have known for so long. Now I have an alternative. It is hard making the choice to be healthy and I haven't quite got there yet but I am trying. I think I know now why ED decided to rear his head after three years in recovery, he sensed a new presence in my life on top of the fact that I am in my junior year of college and stressed beyond my mind. I need to take time for myself and I need to learn to relax, more importantly I need to learn to love and accept myself as he loves and accepts me.

I Just Don't Know

I am so confused right now. I don't know what I want anymore. I have been restricting and exercising. ED has gotten back in my head, I don't know if he ever left. I don't know if I want to give him up. I look in the mirror and I hate the person I see staring back at me. I just want to lose weight. I want to shrink down to the bone. I hate the excess of fat and flesh. A part of of me knows that this is unhealthy but I don't care. I just want ED to shut up. I am so sick of this. I don't know what to do anymore.

Why Now?

I have always known that my mind is a scary place. Lately I can get no peace. ED is holding my mind hostage. All I want to do is restrict and exercise. I feel like a totally different person. He is telling me to do whatever it takes to lose weight and I don't know how to fight. It has not been this bad for a long time which makes me wonder what has changed?

Right now my life is not bad. Yes there had been a lot of emotional difficulties recently. Friends in trouble, family issues, school stress but my life is finally starting to really come together. Perhaps ED sees that I am really leaving him behind and thus is trying to make his last stand. I have finally found the love of my life. My boyfriend and I are perfect for each other. He really loves me and has opened my eyes to how wonderful life really can be. He has shown me what unconditional love is and can be. My friends have been my family and loved me in the past but this is different. I want to spend the rest of my life with my boyfriend and he feels the same way. Why am I letting ED get in the way of that? Why am I letting him back in my when I've been doing really well over the past three or so years? I do not know why but I know that I need to find out and find out fast before I'm too far gone down a path that I will regret.

Bumps on the road

I have learned that the mirror lies. That love can conquer all if given the chance. That the scale is not my friend. That as much as ED tells me otherwise, I need to eat.

I have been really struggling lately. ED has been fighting my recovery and doing really well. He has been coming between me and my boyfriend a lot lately. We've been having so many more fights. I can watch him take over and see the personality changes. This needs to stop now! I cannot keep living like this.

Failure

So often I feel like a total failure. A failure of a sister, a failure of a daughter, a failure of a friend and girlfriend. If I can't do it perfectly then I fail. I don't know when this sense of failure started. I know I can't have been born with it, so where did it come from? As a child I don't remember this feeling or the fear that I was not good enough.

I don't know when it started and I don't know why. I wish that I did so I could work on getting over this but nothing worthwhile in life comes easy so I will have to try to find another way to deal with these feelings. It makes sense the the pitfalls of perfectionism play a role in my feelings of failure. Closely tied to the feeling of failing is another well known emotion for me, guilt.

Failure, perfectionism and guilt are so interwoven that I do not always know where one starts and the other begins. I know that guilt can be good but too much is bad. Everything in moderation the saying goes. Yet I have to ask is there ever a moderate amount of perfectionism? -- But I am getting side tracked. Guilt permeates my life. I feel guilty for everything. Everything is my fault, or so I feel but that I one of the most self-centered beliefs I hold, another part of myself chimes in. Who am I to think that the whole world revolves around in such a way that everything bad that happens is caused by me? And so the cycle of guilt continues. I need to stop this cycle but I just don't know where to begin.

I look at my life and my feelings and everything and just feel so overwhelmed. Where do I start fixing myself? Where do I begin? How do I recognize what emotion I am feeling? SO many questions. I just get scared and don't want to deal with it. I run away and turn to ED because I know he will make things easier. With ED I can succeed. My success and failure is measured by the scale. It is tangible, clear cut. There is a solid answer to a solid question: did I lose weight, am I reaching that goal weight, am I working out? I run to ED because he is easy, he is known. There is certainty with ED that I have not found elsewhere. But I need to face facts and see ED for what he is. And I need not to be looking at life in terms of failure and success but look at it as something else. Failure is falling and staying down. I guess it's back to the basics, back to being a child because the little child learning to walk doesn't get discouraged when she falls but has her cry and then pushes herself right back up and tries again.

Perfection Is My Enemy

I heard this line in a song recently and was struck by the truth of it. I know that in treatment we are told this but honestly all the things in treatment don't really sink in until we are ready to accept them. Sometimes we have to make mistakes to see the truth in what we are told and fortunately for me I've made lots of mistakes. I am trying to fight ED but my will to fight is so weak right now. Every time I look in the mirror I just see how fat and ugly I am. I just want to shrink my body. I want to be skinny. I want to have not fat. I am keeping my intake just under a thousand calories. I know this isn't enough. I have ensure plus and that is what is mostly fueling my body right now. I hate it but when I try to eat I just hear ED screaming at me. I hear him all the time. I am not being honest with myself or with others.

Honesty is so hard right now. All I want to do is hide. I can't tell people what is going on. I need to keep it to myself because I know others will stop me and right now I don't want to be stopped. I just want to lose weight. I want this so badly. I can't stop these thoughts. I don't want to eat. I don't know how it got this bad again. I am lying to people again. I will do anything to not eat. I just want to be skinny. I know I need to fight this but it's so hard.

Courage

Courage, n. the power or quality of dealing with or facing danger, fear, pain, etc.
I find myself lacking courage lately. I have tried fighting this and I'm trying so hard. I am trying to fight ED but it's sooo so hard and a part of me doesn't want to. I want to live and yet I don't. It's like I'm split in two. I'm fighting myself. I know this is how ED works, how he operates. I know it's all tricks but I still believe him. I still trust him. I don't know why but I do. It just feels like I can't win. I'm overwhelmed and scared. I'm tired and lonely. All of the feelings I had three years ago and earlier are back. I don't want to eat. I want to go to the gym everyday and work until I drop. I want to run my body into the ground. I want to make it disappear; I want to disappear. Every day is so hard. Getting up, going to class, getting everything done that I need to get done. I feel like I have no time. I can't breathe. Everything feels like it's falling apart. I am away from home, things should be better. I hear so many of my friends are struggling and I'm jealous? I ask myself what is wrong with me? Why am I like this? I blame myself, and that is one of my biggest mistakes.

A bit over three weeks ago a friend tried to kill herself. I was the one there for her. She contacted me and I could tell there was something wrong. I called Campus Police, I rode with her to the hospital, I held her hand until her boyfriend showed up. I did my best to keep everyone involved up to date. This was important. And yet.... I feel responsible. I should have been able to tell that something was wrong. I should have checked up on her. I should have known. And worse, a week or less earlier, that could have been me. I keep asking myself, why wasn't that me? Why was it her? It should have been me being taken away. Maybe if I had tried to kill myself she would not have done so. But, I cannot blame myself. I could not have known. I did my best. I helped her as much as she let me help her and that is all I can do. Yet the guilt of this stays with me. One of my biggest struggles in my propensity to blame myself for things that are completely beyond my control. This is one of the major things keeping me from true recovery. I have tried to work on this but it's so hard and ED is so easy and ED seems like such a friend that I forget what He brings with.

I keep saying just a few pounds, just a few pounds but I know what that leads to. I know that just a few pounds becomes just my life. Sometimes I don't care that death may be the consequence. I keep saying I just want to be thin, but what is it that I really want? Why am I really heading back down this road? I went down it about a month ago and my boyfriend got me out and I'm headed there again and I don't care. I need to find that inspiration to get back on track but ED is soo persuasive and right now He's making sense. I need some comfort in my life and ED is right there saying I can come to Him for it just like I used to. I'm not drinking enough. I've started cutting back on food. I started going to the gym again today. Ed wants me to keep this up. ED wants me to go back to Him and He's convincing me that I do as well. I need to look at what I really want. I need to look at my needs and take care of myself but I don't seem able to do that. I wake up every morning and look at myself with disgust. I hate being in my body and I hate my body. I know that it is ED whispering these things in my ear, I know this but I lack the COURAGE to stand up, to stand in the rain. For now at least I'm still being honest with myself (mostly) and others. I need to beat this before the lying starts. I need to beat this before it takes over my life again but I'm SO SCARED. I'm terrified. I used to say that I had no fears. Oh how young and naive I was then, I was scared, I just wasn't admitting it. I cannot let my fear paralyze me and allow ED to put up those walls again and cut the ones I love out of my life. I need to try and yet I'm still scared.

Goddess, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference.

Overwhelmed

I have not posted here in a while. Life has been absolutely insane. It just seems like I've had one thing after another come up and try to push me down. I have been struggling for a bit but recently a sad event really opened my eyes and I have started eating normally again but the guilt is so strong. I still see with the eyes of ED when I look in the mirror. I cannot get his voice out of my head. I know that if I go to the gym I will work myself into the ground so I have tried to stay away from it. I know that I have been depressed. I know because of my thoughts and desires. I really want to do whatever I can to hurt myself. I am just so tired all the time. I have trouble concentrating. I just need life to get a little easier and have not so much to do. I need a break and it doesn't seem like I'm going to get one.

I don't Know What to Do

I don't know what to do. ED is coming back. I don't know what to do. I don't want to be like this. I don't want to  do this again. I don't want to go back down that road but I'm scared. I just want to starve. I want to starve myself and I know that's not normal. I keep wondering what is wrong with me? Why am I allowing this back into my life? What am I supposed to do? At least I have therapy tomorrow. What is wrong with me that I just to starve myself to death? Why do I feel like such a failure? Why can't I just be at peace? I need help.

Dear Mom

There is much I would like to say to you. So much that I don't even know where to begin. What does a daughter say to her mother when there really is nothing left to say? I love you. I really do but I can't be around you anymore. I know that you try and I know that you mean well. I know that life isn't easy with me. I know that we fight a lot and it sucks but you need to take responsibility for your actions.

I have to say that you are always a little too late. Apologizing for everything this summer the day I go back to school doesn't really work and if you think that doing so means that you don't have to do anything or change than you are wrong. We can't have a relationship this way. This summer I told you again and again that I needed to heave dinner earlier and you did nothing; I told you that continued recovery from my eating disorder depended on it and you did nothing. How do you think that makes feel mom? Do you not care enough about me? Am I not important enough? I don't understand and I need to.

I have something to say.
I have something to say TO YOU!!!
You, you who gave birth to me.
You, who "raised" me,
You who taught me,
You who ignored me.

I have something to say
I have something to say TO YOU!!!
You, you who brought me into the world
You who saw to my education
You who made the "Laws"
You who policed me
You who "MADE" me
I have something to say TO YOU.
I want to tell you how you made me feel.
I want to tell you how you treated me.
I want to tell you how you used me.
I want to tell you how you scare me.
I want to tell you how I hate that side of you.
I want to tell you how you hurt me.
I want to tell you how I cry,
Cry myself to sleep,
Cry for me,
Cry for you,
Cry because it hurts,
Cry because I'm scared,
Cry because you become a monster,
Cry because I don't know you,
Cry because ... I've lost my mom.

I have something to say,
I have something to say TO YOU
I have to tell you, tell you
That you abuse me
That you hurt me

Tell you that it's not okay.
Tell you that I will not take the blame.
Tell you that I am not your punching bag.
Tell you that I'm done.

I ... I ... (can I say it?) I am cutting the cord.
I cannot accept you as my mother.
I am sorry,
So, so, so, so, so sorry.
I cannot do this anymore.
I need to get over this.
I need to get out of this relationship.
That is what I have to say,
That is what I have to say to you.

Wishing, Wondering, Processing

Well the first week of school is over and I survived! That has to be good. So what have I learned so far? Well more than I would think actually, and I 'm not really talking about academics. I have learned to drop a class, albeit a gym class, without too much fuss. I have learned that maybe taking a fifth class this semester isn't such a good idea for my mental or emotional well-being. I learned that being at school might be the best time to delve deeper into my issues and work on the underlying cause of a lot of my struggles since I do not have to worry about the day-to-day surviving I do at home.

I know that I can't blame my mom for everything in my life but this summer I came to realize that she is a huge part of my problems. It is quite possible that I can't be healthy as long as I am around her. There is too much stress and emotional upheaval when around her. I realize that I resent her and every project she is involved in. I feel like she didn't really pay enough attention to me as a kid or the family as a whole. I know that she was older when she had me but that doesn't explain why she had the energy to carry out all these projects but she couldn't spend time with me that summer. I understand that the town needed her and the Grange project needed her too. I needed her. I don't think I've ever said those words about my mother. It's weird but I cannot recall ever really admitting to needing her. I don't like to need anyone. I want to be independent and independent people have no needs. I know that that statement is false but I can't help believing it and it has brought me much trouble. I need to learn that it is okay to accept that I have needs and that I can ask people for help. To ask for help always seemed to risky, it opened me up for attack. That was what I got when I opened up to my family. I was made fun of and belittled, so I learned to close off those doors and lock the windows. So now I have to learn to be vulnerable all over again. I am making progress. Slowly. I am learning to open up to those I trust and to trust again. It's a process, as is everything in life, a journey to take and I am but the explorer in uncharted territory.

"When we were children, we used to think that when we grow up we would no longer be vulnerable. But really to grow up is to accept vulnerability ... To be alive is to be vulnerable." -Madeleine L'Engles

First Day of Classes and Fear

"Every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end." -Seneca

Today was the first day of class. Overall it wasn't bad. I had three academic classes and the introductory class for my T'ai Chi class. Going through today made me realize that I can't take a fifth class. Life is crazy and I can't make life any more complicated than it already is. I need to have time to breathe and relax. I need to learn that it is okay not to do everything. I think that I need to give up one of my clubs. I am doing too much and I know that starting an Active Minds chapter at Mount Holyoke would look really good on my resume but I have to think about my emotional and mental well-being. I am getting chest pain more often now which makes me think that it is probably stress and anxiety. I am going to try to contact my psychiatrist about maybe getting something more for my anxiety. I just really haven't been doing too well lately.

I am really excited about my classes but it is going to be a lot of work. I am taking two 300-level English on the same day which means a lot of reading. I am hoping that I can handle it but I'm really nervous about it. I am terrified of failure and hold myself to high standards. I need to learn that a B+ or B is not the end of the world.  It is okay not to ace every class. Perfection is not a realistic goal. I know this but I still try to hold myself to those standards and when I inevitably fail then I am a horrible, worthless person, or so I tell myself. This year I am going to try to work harder on that. Maybe I will try to purposefully do something imperfectly and work through it, telling myself it is okay. Life will not end if everything is not perfect. My perfectionism keeps me from even beginning something because I am too afraid that I will mess it up so I don't even try. This is not okay with me. I do not want to be holding back on life because of fear. I used to say that I was afraid of nothing. I now see how big of a lie that was. So now I will work on conquering my fear. However the paradox is that fear of failure to conquer my fears makes me not want to try. So I guess step one is to work on my fear of failure and go from there.
"Do the thing you fear the most and the death of the fear is certain." -Mark Twain

Classes, classes, classes

Well it's that time. Classes start tomorrow and I am already planning on overloading myself. I talked with a couple of friends today. One of my friends had overloaded herself and I was talking to her. She almost had a mental breakdown last semester. So I took some advise from her and am dropping my 8 o'clock pilates class. I still have T'ai Chi at 9 but she recommended against back to back gym classes especially early morning ones. I guess that is a good idea since I have issues with over doing exercise and stuff. Plus I promised friends that I would work out with them so I guess I should be careful. I really want to do everything but I know that it is not possible.

I am still having trouble with ED. At least I am eating three meals a day so far but they aren't the biggest meals and I don't want to eat. I haven't been to the gym yet but T'ai Chi is tomorrow, however I think that T'ai Chi will be good for working with ED. It sounds like we will have time for meditation and I think I need more of that in my life. On the plus side I have not done anymore self-harm. I have wanted to but my boyfriend took away my razors for one and I don't want to break a new one. Last time when I burned myself it was more circumstantial. With the power outage, depression, and a burning flame it was just too easy. I am trying not to put myself in positions where it would be easy to hurt myself. I don't need to add that stress to my life.

I am going to make an effort this year to not over do it. I may have to drop a club. I'm not happy about it but three clubs is kind of a lot especially when I have leadership roles in all three. I am going to try to stay away from drama but it seems to follow me wherever I go. However I am not going to let it get me down. Life does not wait. I am going to go out and live it and take every opportunity. That said I have to learn when it's an opportunity that will enrich my life and learn to say no when it may just add stress. Sigh it's so confusing but I will work on my need to be perfect and do everything.

Welcome Back

I'm back home!!!!!!!!!!!! Well what is home to me, Mount Holyoke College!!!! It is so good to be back. Life here is great. I am set up in my own room. I have a single this year!!! Classes start on Wednesday and I am excited. As excited as I am for the new year, I am also really nervous. I really want to do well this year. I don't want it to be like last year. I want to have fun and be free to be me. I don't want more friend drama. I don't want to have to find new friends again this year. Life is too complicated. I need to remember to relax and go easy on myself but I know that I push myself too hard and am worried that I might be doing that again. I am thinking about taking an additional class and I want to get a second job. I need the money but I know I can't do that. I need to work on how hard I push myself and what I spend my time doing. I need to learn to breath and be calm.

Thinking

So today was rather productive. I heard back from a few therapists. There is a therapist who seems good. I am working on setting up an appointment with her. I am taking steps to ensure that I do not go back to how I was before. Everyday gets harder it seems. I am constantly fighting with myself. I know that it is not myself that it is ED I am fighting but it does not feel that way. I want to be skinny. I want to loose weight. I don't want to look in the mirror and see this fatty staring back at me. However I have got to remember that ED is a lying bastard who can warp my mind. He follows me everywhere I go. It's like I can't escape him. I just want to be alone and not have him in my head 24/7. I am going keep going trying. I am going to keep on following my meal plan. I am going keep fighting. I will. I will.

Why do I have to be like this? I hate the constant fighting and back and forth. I don't want to tie myself to ED but I do. I don't understand why this is happening. It could be the depression or being home or it could be going back to school. Last semester was really difficult with friends and I'm scared the same thing would happen. I don't want to make friends just to have them stop being my friends. I'd rather not go through that again. I just want to get better. I really want to be better.

Making Plans and Checking them Thrice

Okay, sorry for the cheesy title it just came out. Things are starting to get better. I'm having lunch and breakfast and dinner and following my meal plan almost completely. This weekend I head back to school and I'm trying to plan ahead for support down there. I know that I can see my therapist at school 15 times a year. I really like her but if I start to relapse or slip I think I may need to see someone more often than that so I have started doing research on therapists in the area. I really want to find the right therapist. I have had soooo many in the past 6 to 7 years and I have only liked my current therapist. I know that it is important to find the right person.  I have been researching and sending out emails. I really want to do this right. I want to have backup if things go badly. I know that it will be really stressful. I'm only taking 4 classes, as of now, but I'm working and I have an independent study project I'm doing with my psychology adviser. I am also getting involved with more clubs and organizations. I really want to make the most of this experience because it only happens once. Life is crazy at school and I want to have someone I can go to if I need to. I know I have friends who are here to support me but I've had some really bad experiences with friends at college in the past so I really want to have a therapist I can go to. Now I just have to talk with the parents so I can get permission to see someone.

I really want to have a good year and I'm really scared that ED will mess this up. I had a really bad semester in the spring after a bad semester in the fall. Last year I had two sets of friends dump me and I now I'm scared to make friends because I don't want them to do the same. I spent weeks depressed because I had no one to talk to make friends. The friends I have now are going abroad in the spring. I guess I will stick to my groups. There are some great people there but one of the friends who is no longer a friend is in one of my favorite clubs. I am not going to let her keep me from it though. I am going to get through this. I will have a good year and I will enjoy it. I am not going to let last year stop me from having fun and meeting new people. I'm going to do this. I am going to do the best that I can.

Getting Better, Slowly

Slowly working my way back. Some days are better than others but slowly. I had lunch today. Which is good I guess. I feel really guilty about it plus I had a piece of pizza for dinner. Dan took me out to dinner and he made sure that I knew that it was ED and not reality. I am trying to remember I am not ED and ED is not me. I am very tired. I just want it all to go away/

When the Lights Go Out

So looking back on the past week or so I realize that I've been depressed lately. I guess I still am but now that I recognize it I can work on turning on the light. I know that I have been struggling with ED and I've had a few instances of self-harm. I need to find ways to deal with these things. I need to work on dealing with my emotions and identifying them. I don't really understand how this happened. I thought that I was doing really well but I guess that I let my guard down and ED and self-harm saw the opportunity to come back into my life. Maybe it's just because I'm home around my family in which case I hope it all gets better when I go back. However I cannot expect a change in location and environment to change everything. I have to work on this. I cannot be blind-sided by my depression again. My plan: 1) start journalling/blogging, 2) talk to friends/family, 3) take time for myself, 4) relax, yoga, meditate. I will do better. I want to work on it. I want to be better. Most of the time. I am really fighting myself on this but I know that it's not myself that I'm fighting but my disorder/disease and I just have to keep reminding myself that that part that says it's me is not. I can do this and I will.

Angel

I realize how lucky I am. I know that I do not always appreciate it. My life is hard yes, especially with my family around, but I have something, or I should say someone, that many people do not have. I know that through thick and thin I have him, my boyfriend, my angel. He is there when I need him. He brought me to the ER when I was not responsive. He holds me and talks to me when I feel ED seeping through my thoughts. He is there when I want to cut and takes my razors from me so I won't do it. He lets me know that he is here and he will always be here for me. I do not know what I would do without him or where I would be. I am sooo grateful to him for all that he has done and all that he is to me. I love him and he loves me. For once I know what unconditional love from another human being is. Thank you Dan, my angel.

Pains and Anxieties

Two trips to the ER in one week. Chest and abdominal pain for one and lethargy for two. The second trip resulted from anxiety and emotional turmoil. I'm not sure what caused the anxiety. Life has been crazy. With everything going on ED has been really active and trying to get me back. Hopelessness and fear have returned and I don't know how I am going to deal with all of this. My family is not being all that supportive. I guess it makes sense because of the stress at home but when I'm with my boyfriend things are great and I was with him when it happened. Although when I am with him I let myself feel my emotions and my walls come down so that could be why it happened. Everything just seems so complicated and crazy. I wish it would all go away and my body would be okay. I'm really scared and just want to be okay. My self-harm is also trying to come back but I know why this time. I know it's because of the stress of my medical/emotional state. I know it's because I'm home with my family and stressed out. So now I have to figure out how to deal with all of this.

Well a good first step would be to stop questioning the diagnosis for the chest/abdominal pain because that will only make me go crazier. Then I need to work on how to relax and practice some deep breathing. Now that I have my stitches out I can start doing some light exercising and basic yoga which should help a lot. Then I need to work on recognizing my emotions and dealing with them in the moment so they do not build up and manifest in physical ways. When I go back to school I need to start seeing a therapist again. It is good that I am not overloading myself at school. Life will get better. I have to believe that.

ED's Gifts To Me

ED has brought many things into my life. He has made my life a living hell. He has given me anxiety. He has taken years of my life. He has set me up for constant failure with his demands of perfection. He has worked to manipulate my relationship with food, weight and exercise. He has disrupted my body's balance and more. He took me from my family and friends. He ruined my junior year of high school and my transcript. And now that I am in recovery he is still haunts me and tries to ruin my life.

I am not talking about the constant reminders that he is there. I am talking about the possible long term effects of ED. I have been having chest pains for over a year now and recently it's been getting worse. This summer I have seen all manner of doctors, been to the ER and they have found nothing. It is frustrating not knowing what is going on and not having any answers, any clue about what is wrong. It almost feels like another method of trying to get me to return to him. And I almost feel like doing it.

Not knowing why I am having this pain or what is going on is not only frustrating but scary as well. Not knowing anything has brought up feelings of hopelessness and ED is once again offering his help. He is calling to me, saying that he can help. If I just focus on food, cut down my intake, exercise, I can feel better, he will help me to feel better. But I know, even though I am scared, frustrated and feeling hopeless, returning to ED would only make things worse. I cannot go back to him but more importantly I will not go back. I will stand up to him. I will deal with it and I will emerge stronger for it. I do not want anything more from ED. He has given and taken enough. I am not ED and he is not me. I will not be fooled again. I won't, I won't, I won't, I won't!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reflections

Looking back at the years I spent deep in my eating disorder and struggling with self-harm, I find myself grasping for memories that do not seem to be there. Everything seems fuzzy and confusing. Blurry images and static are all that remains from that time. It is difficult to look back over the years of my life and not be able to recall, events, fond memories or anything but emptiness and it scares me. What was I doing with my life that I have lost years of living, years of memories? It makes me realize how much ED really took from me.

In those years where I was actively engaging in a relationship with ED and self-harm I completely lost myself in them. They became me and I them. Of course I have no memories to speak of as I was not myself, I was not Anna so Anna would not have those memories. With ED and self-harm by my side all I had to do was get through the day. There was no energy for anything else. It was all about surviving that moment. My focus was on food and cutting so even if I, Anna, was present in that moment all I would remember is food and cutting. Now that I am in recovery I want to make the most of my time. I want to make up for lost time and have experiences and make memories. I want to live to the fullest. I want to be myself and get to know who that is. I get to have adventures and try new things, something ED never let me do. I will work through my anxiety and not let it or ED hold me back. I don't want to look back on any more years and not be able to remember or see only fuzzy flashes of events. From now on I will do my best to just be.

Who Am I?

Who am I without ED?
I have asked this question many times and I don't really know how to answer it - or maybe I am afraid to answer it. For years I have allowed ED to define me, wanted to be defined as ED. It is scary to think of this question. For so long all I had was ED. He was my constant companion. He was always there for me. I could turn to him when I felt overwhelmed, unhappy, depressed, alone, scared, angry, etc. and without him I often feel lost. At times I run back to him, clinging on to the known but now my eyes have been opened; I know what comes with ED - fear, hurt, illness, weakness, shadows, emptiness, death. So what does this leave me? Who is this person left in ED's absence?

Well, there are many ways to describe me but does that really say who I am? I am Anna Elizabeth Smith. I am a daughter, sister, friend, granddaughter, niece, cousin, lover, girlfriend. I am a student. I am a pagan/wiccan. I am a MoHo. I am an alumna. I am a Leo. A cat lover. A reader. A writer. A poet. A fighter. A woman. A human. A Vermonter. A former Catholic and Catholic school girl. I am all these things but does that say who I really am? Am I more than this? How am I defined? Can I be defined? Is it a question of who I am or who I want to be? These questions challenge me each day. I used to be able to answer the question, who am I quite easily, I was ED but now I can be so much more and am so much more. Even if I cannot put words to it I know that I am more than my eating disorder and even when ED tries to walk back through that door I know that I am capable of more than being just ED.

Who am I? I am who I am. I am a human being in flux. There is no one definition for who I am. I can be defined by my actions, by my characteristics, by my relationships, by my place in society but I am so much more than all of those things. I am a living, breathing force. I am a free spirit in a body in the image of my Goddess granted the gift of life. My body, my life is holy and precious and I will not allow anyone to crush that or taint this gift. I have been given a chance to make a difference in this world and I would be foolish to give that up. ED will not weigh me down with his bullshit. He will not extinguish my light and life. I will not give him that chance. I see him for what he really is and I am stronger than him. I see him for the weakling he is preying on humanity and luring innocent and wonderful people into his abusive relationship, a relationship that if unstopped will result in death. I will not let him take me because I have learned one thing about who I am if nothing else. ED has taught me that I am strong, stronger than he reckoned because I fought him and I will fight him every day that I live and each day I grow stronger for the fight. So I may not know who I am in my entirety but I know enough and each day I have the opportunity to learn more.

Trust

Trust n. reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing; confidence.

Trust is such a difficult thing. It requires faith, faith in a person or thing, faith that that person has your best interests at heart, faith that you can rely on that person or thing no matter what. In some ways I am a very trusting person, yet that has changed over time as everything does.

When I was a kid I had that kid's sense of wonder, faith and trust in all and everything. I knew that everything and everyone was trustworthy and I had nothing to fear. That changed as I got older. I slowly realized that depending on my parents, not the best idea. My friends I could always trust. Eventually I just stopped trusting people in general. It was around this time that I started finding my trust placed elsewhere, specifically my eating disorder.

My eating disorder offered me an escape. It offered me a safe place, someone I could trust. I put my faith in ED and everything was great. That is until my health and weight went dangerously downhill. And so it was that once again I had placed my trust in someone and again been betrayed. So now I am again learning to trust.

I am learning to trust myself, trust my instincts. I am learning to explore to overcome my fears by facing them. I always loved a challenge when I was younger and I am learning to find joy in the challenge once again. Most importantly I have found someone I trust who is helping me explore and helps me see when ED is trying to may a comeback. It feels so good to be able to place my trust in someone whom I know cares about me again. I love learning to let someone in, let someone see the real me. I want to stay like this. I want to get back to my life. I want to live my life without ED and I am on my journey to do so.

If At First You Don't Succeed....

Try, try again. Well that's what I'm doing. Life keeps throwing curve balls but all I can do it go with it. My anxiety does not make this easy but over the years I have learned some techniques for managing anxiety and I am working with it. Life goes on and it does not wait for you to catch up. Though I do not have a job this summer and only a couple days a week are taken up by my internship I find that this summer has been more stressful than my school year. It seems that I will not get a break. Being "home" is so overwhelming, difficult, frustrating that I found myself going back to my eating disorder, my comfort zone in what seems like a war zone. I know that I cannot handle conflict well. I slipped fairly far back into behaviors before I was ready to ask for help. Unfortunately my first request for help fell on deaf ears so I closed up again until I was at the point where I needed to have ensure to make it through the day. Then I tried again this time going to my old therapist, finally help. Going to her was just what I needed, reassurance that I was not crazy, that nothing in my family had changed in the 3 years I'd been in recovery and dealing with my issues, that of course I was hurting and that it was natural and I did not need to play out my feelings on my body nor take out my anger, fear, frustration with my family on my body. My body is not a war zone. I can be me and I will be me.

Now I can get back to what is important to me. I can read. I can write. I can just be. I can stand up for myself. I will not fight other's battles for them. I will not get involved in my family's conflicts as they are, as my therapist constantly reminds me, not my problem. I will focus on myself and my needs. I will get to know what my body is telling me and listen to it. Most importantly I will heal. On my own and with my friends and real family, those who act as such.

And Life Goes On

"I took some time out for life." -James L. Brooks

Well it's not so that I took some time out for life as much as it is life took some time out for me. I know that it's been a looong time since I've written and there are many reasons for this. First, it's been crazy here. Conflicts, fights, avoiding, therapy, boyfriend, eating disorder difficulties, the farm (aka animals), etc. Things are changing here, perhaps, finally. Who knows what will happen. Mom might be finally losing her grip on the family. But for me it's a little too late. I have realized that for my health I cannot be around her for any period of time. Coming home has once again been a HUGE mistake. I cannot come back next summer. It hurts a lot but she has many issues of her own to deal with before I can have a real relationship. I cannot allow myself to be hurt over and over in this fashion. I do not know if she does it on purpose, I'm pretty sure she does not, but at this point I have tried to tell her what I need and again and again she ignores it. So as much as I hate it I have to protect myself if she will not.

Next I fall and open my knee. Of course since I wanted to get home and didn't want to wait for the rain to stop which then resulted in running in the rain which then resulted in my slipping and falling, it's my fault, clearly. Well at least according to my mother. So thus another reason I cannot be around her. I'm just very tired of all of this.

On the bright side I have been doing really well with my ED and have been following my meal plan for the most part the last few days. But that's all for now. I'm exhausted.

Peace, love and hope~

Everything's Falling Apart

It seems like I'm just going backwards and falling back into patterns. First with the eating and how with the cutting. I can't stop it. I feel like crap. I know it's my choice but sometimes I don't feel like I have a choice. It hurts. It hurts feeling alone. It hurts being home. I feel so lost and scared and confused. I just want everything to go away. I've been really depressed and thinking of suicide but I couldn't do that to my friends and my boyfriend. I just want to be better but I don't at the same time.

Grant Me Serenity

So what has been going on in my life? Well my chest pain has been on the rise as has ED. I started cutting again. Only one incident but it was not great. Life is still stressful and crazy. The family stuff isn't getting any better but I'm dealing with it. I'm trying to take things slowly but who knows what will happen. I haven't been on much so I haven't written in a while. Maybe that's part of the problem, that I haven't been able to get it out.

Struggling Thoughts

I don't know what to do. I've been trying really hard not to give in but I can't help it. I don't know if I can fight it anymore and I'm not sure I want to. I miss ED and I kind of want him back. I don't know what to do. I'm so confused and scared. I just feel like giving up sometimes. Lying in my bed at night thoughts come to me and more and more the wish to just die comes. I fight it but sometimes I just feel so hopeless and other times I feel hope that I can go back to ED. I am torn and I don't know what to do. I don't want to tell anyone but I might need help. I don't want to my family to know. I am so scared. I know that I need help but I can't let my parents know. I just can't. I'm also having more chest pain. More frequently though not lasting as long. I just want everything to be over.

Getting Back

I almost completely followed my meal plan today!!! It wasn't easy and I feel like crap but it's a step. I really have to thank Dan for it. He has been amazing as I've been struggling. He has tried to help me stay positive and been so supportive. I don't think I'd where I am today if it wasn't for him. I am learning slowly how to deal with this. I love him so much. I want to be rid of ED and Dan is helping me do this. I am going to do this. I will do this.

Music and Gaining

I just finished an extremely wonderful book called Gaining: The Truth about Life after Eating Disorders that was amazingly helpful. Written by Amie Lee it discusses many possible causes of EDs as well as ways that recovering/recovered women deal with the urges, thoughts and other ED related things and incorporate these personality traits into a health life. It was amazing. I am doing better than yesterday but I'm still struggling a bit. Finishing the book really helped though and gives me hope that I can do this. I want to close by posting a song that I listen to when I'm struggling.

Doctor's Visit

I went to my doctor's today because I've been having chest pain. While there I had my normal weight check and it was the first time in years the nurse did not know not to let me see my weight. So in a moment of weakness in recovery I looked. 125.8!!!!!! Okay so I was not expecting that. I am freaking out. ED of course immediately stepped up and started screaming. Now I can't get him to shut up. I told my boyfriend and some friends and they are trying to be supportive. However I just want to lose 5-10lbs but I know what that can lead to. I am being careful but while a part of me is screaming 'let it go,' I can't and I know this is going to be a major roadblock in my recovery. I am still waiting to see how this plays out and I am very torn. While I have been told that I look great and healthy and happy I can't seem to get this number out of my head and it is scaring me. I know it is just a number but I can't remember the last time I weighed that much. Maybe it is a good thing I don't know. It could be water weight I tell myself but then this little voice whispers back what if it isn't and I start freaking out all over again. I know that normal people do not do this and I wish it didn't bother me so much but I can't seem to help it. I had been struggling before I went to the doctor's and now I just don't really care. Actually, now I kind of want to go back I want to be skinny. I just want to lose a little weight but I know where that will lead me but I don't know if I can stop. I don't know if I want to stop and I don't know where this will lead me. I have been doing pretty well for the past three years and the realization that I have been in recovery for three years has kind of freaked me out as well. It's like I'm losing my best friend, the one thing that has gotten me through so much. I'm losing an identity and I don't know how to deal with that. What happens when I am no longer the girl with the eating disorder? Already my family acts as if it never happened and that everything is fine and normal and things have gone backwards at home. I don't know what to do. I'm losing a part of myself that has protected me for years and I want it back. I don't want to be ignored and yet I do. I'm so confused and lost.

Today Is The Anniversary

Today is the three year anniversary of a major suicide attempt. I guess every suicide attempt is major but I say that meaning that this was the one I had planned and thought about ahead of time. While not eating for ten days would usually have the same effect I had been starving myself for a good two and a half years before that attempt and it was a combination ED moment and suicide attempt. But taking 50 aspirin pills, that was just a suicide attempt. Looking back I have to say that I have come a long way from the person I was three years ago downing those pills. I have grown a lot and done a lot of work to get myself to where I am today. I can't believe it. I won't say that there aren't some days that I might wish I hadn't woken up three years ago tomorrow, but it's not a constant thought. It's been a long three years and so much has happened. I've graduated from high school and gone off to college. I've been in a relationship that didn't last and am in a relationship that is amazing. I have gone to college parties and studied my ass off. And it's all been worth it. I have met some amazing people along the way as well as some not so amazing people. I have lost my virginity and truly loved someone and been loved back. I have made mistakes and learned to accept that. My relationship with my mother has not changed much but my brother and I are closer and my dad is happier. Who can say why I have been changed and blessed with these people and relationships but I believe that I have been changed for the better.

Craziness

Wow. It's been a few days since I've written and that isn't good. I've been crazy busy. I'm lucky that I got to see my dearest three days in a row this weekend. We went out to dinner with his work friends on Friday and ended up back at one of his friend's house for drinks. It was a lot of fun and I think that they like me. I really enjoyed myself and liked meeting new people. It was nice to meet his friends from work. Then Saturday we crashed the graduation party of my godparent's son. It was cool but kind of awkward. We spent a good bit of time there. While there I started having chest pains again which freaked me out though I tried not to show it and did so successfully except Dan saw and was also worried. After that we just hung out at his place which was nice and relaxing before we went to spend Father's Day with my Grammy and Grampy in St. J. It was a very busy weekend with a lot of stress. I'd like to say I survived it well but it was definitely a struggle. Things have been getting harder and harder. I don't know if this is as a result of the Renfrew Reunion or if that just released all these urges, struggles and other hidden thoughts and feelings. I'm thinking the latter. I never really got a chance to work on reducing the thoughts and urges. This is very difficult I know and I just don't know how do deal with it. I've been doing well but I feel like it is a superficial wellness that could crack, has cracked, at any time. Being back home has put me in the environment I developed my issues in. It has gotten better in some ways but worse in others. Everyday I'm terrified that I'm getting closer to falling backwards. Sometimes I can feel myself doing it. I guess that it is good that I can feel myself doing so because that means that I am still connected and outside my eating disorder and other issues that I can recognize when I'm slipping. I guess when I have to worry is when others say I'm slipping and I disagree but that would necessitate that others be aware that I'm struggling and see that I'm going backwards. Dan has been really good with keeping me on track and with him I don't want to lie or hide so I know that I can count on him but I don't know of anyone else I can rely on like that. I'm scared.

ED Wants Back In

ED is trying to take me come back. I didn't want to eat dinner tonight. After a bit my boyfriend talked me into it. I want to lose weight but I guess that's ED talking. I don't know exactly why this is happening. It could just be the stress of being home. I got into a huge fight with my brother which really sucked. I just don't know what to do some times but I'm not going back to ED. I am done hopefully.

Thoughts

"I want to lose weight." I don't know why the thought enters my head tonight. Maybe it's the long day at Women Helping, maybe I'm just tired and vulnerable. I've been struggling a lot recently and I am really tempted to go back to behaviors. I have resisted although I've noticed that I have reduced my starches a little. It's hard being home. Plus I can't find a job so that makes life more difficult. I am trying to stay strong but I'm not sure.

Step 3

Now that I have accepted my Goddess into my life I have accepted that She is in charge of my life. When I have a problem I face She is with me. When I am doing well, She is there with me making me stronger and able to get through. I have placed my life in the care of my Goddess knowing that she will guide me, love me, and take care of me.

Monday, June 13, 2011

Step 2

I believe in a higher power. As a pagan/wiccan I am hesitant to define "higher power" broadly as I believe that there is a greater power out there but that it can be different for different people. I know it's very confusing. To me, my higher power takes the form of a woman. I lean more toward the wiccan definitions of the Goddess as Maiden, Mother and Crone. Without Her I know that I would not be here. My higher power has gotten me through the past 6 years of my life. Though I have come very close to killing myself, inadvertently and purposefully, She has kept me alive through thick and thin to use the cliche. She has seen me through and has brought sanity, safety, comfort, love and life back to my life.

Step 1

I am powerless over ED and self-harm. For years both have ruled my life. I have been in recovery from both for three years and it has taken three years for me to be able to confidently and firmly believe this. I still struggle with both. I have found that when I have wrestled one to the ground the other becomes much stronger and takes over. I admit that I need help and I have gotten help but it is not over. I have gone on now for one or two years thinking that I do not need help anymore but I see now that I do. Life throws things at me, and at everyone I know, and I just cannot work through it alone. I have never really been alone but I know now that I need to ask for help and accept it when it is offered. My life was a mess when I first went into treatment in 2008 and it remained that way until the end of 2008 after three inpatient ED treatments and two psychiatric unit stays. I am working to take back my life and become happy again.

Trying Something New

The 12 Steps of Alcoholic Anonymous

  • Step 1 - We admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable(you can replace alcohol with addiction, gambling ect...)
  • Step 2 - Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity
  • Step 3 - Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood God
  • Step 4 - Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves
  • Step 5 - Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs
  • Step 6 - Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character
  • Step 7 - Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings
  • Step 8 - Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all
  • Step 9 - Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others
  • Step 10 - Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it
  • Step 11 - Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of God's will for us and the power to carry that out
  • Step 12 - Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs

A New Start

I have been in recovery from an Eating Disorder and self-harm for three years now. I have had my ups and downs since then. I recently went back to my first and third treatment center for the Reunion and while I was there I came up with the idea for this blog. I have written on different places before but I want to become more dedicated to my recovery and use this as one of my tools. This is meant to be a place where I can reflect and work towards a better life. Looking in a mirror provides a new view, a different way of looking at things and that is what this is.

Feelings

Will these feelings ever go away? Will I ever be able to eat without feeling guilty? Will I ever be able to look in a mirror and not cringe? It's been several years and though behaviors are better the thoughts still come and come and come. I get so tired of listening but I can't stop. I just want to be left in peace. Shall I ever be at peace with myself and be able to be happy?

Ice Cream

So having ice cream maybe not the best idea. I'm sick of being ruled by my ED and I love coffee ice cream but now i feel gross. I hate how I feel after eating the stuff. GRRRR

Gym

I really want to work out, the only problem is that I tend to over do it. I really want to work out but I don't want to head downhill again. I really miss being able to work out. I feel fat and gross, disgusting. All I want to do is lose weight but I know I can't do that. I hate my stomach and I hate my legs, I hate my thighs and I hate my chest. My face is fat and my fingers are short. I just want to be skinny and beautiful but I cannot do so. I hate being in my body and just want to rip my skin off. On the outside I look okay but my head is spinning, my thoughts are racing, it won't shut up and I cannot find peace. I just want it to go away and be able to enjoy my life but ED won't let me.
